The goal of the campaign is to get 25,000 people to sign the online petition. Rothmans, Benson & Hedges (Canada) Ltd. has canceled its sponsorship of the Symphony of Fire fireworks festivals in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. The Symphony of Fire international musical fireworks competition ignite the skies over English Bay with their dazzling pyrotechnic displays. The Symphony of Fire is the largest offshore international fireworks competition in the world, enjoyed by 1.6 million people annually. According to Tourism Vancouver, The 2000 Symphony of Fire generated $28.8 million in economic activity; including $13.6 million in visitor spending. It also contributed $10 million to wages and salaries plus created 460 jobs. The Symphony of Fire musical fireworks competitions are considered to be the most important in the world and are unique to Canada. Although there are non-musical fireworks competitions elsewhere in the world, musical fireworks competitions of this size and caliber do not exist.
